Almost everyone goes through an introspective state or phase where they investigate themselves more thoroughly. As a phase it will lead to understanding of ones nature or personality, and qualities as an individual, compared to others, but the phase also means that one has to be alone by oneself, loneliness this way can be a mixed experience. Sometimes it is a gift, something we long for, other times we feel alone, like we have been forgotten, or that nobody really cares, and loneliness and isolation can be unpleasant consequences of this process, when we feel that we are not taken care of or loved by anyone.
